Research Activities: Climate-engineering. Sea level change. Ice sheet dynamics. Social-natural and indigenous-western science co-design of targeted interventions to conserve the cryosphere.
Climate simulations with Earth System Models and local impact models. Sea level change and prediction and extreme event scenarios. I have also published on a wide variety of subjects including mathematics, economics, history, ice cores (including the DEP technique I developed in my PhD), remote sensing and social science.
Chief scientist on 2007-2009 International Polar Year project: Kinnvika. I lead the University of the Arctic Thematic Network on Frozen Arctic Conservation. I am the Finnish representative on International Arctic Science Committee (IASC) Glaciology Network. A Member of World Meteorological Organization advisory panel on Geoengineering and a Steering committee member of the Geoengineering Model Intercomparison Project (GeoMIP) of the World Climate Research Programme (WCRP).
